Tyrell nahhh. PEC had the lights off, Arena is lit. Would rather the former.

The old PEC was head and shoulders above Perth Arena for Basketball games IMO.

Their house lighting and sound system was far superior to the Perth Arena house gear.

I like how everyone was so close to the action. Perth Arena has that massive gap between the court and bowl seating.

Half a billy doesn't get you much these days. Quite sad really when you look at the cost and what we have got for it.

@RMQ: There was a huge gap between the court and seats at the PEC, too. Remember they turned the court 90 degrees when Vlahov took over.

I don't recall the exact numbers, but I did have them at one point and I'm fairly sure the front row at the PEC was further from the floor than the front row at the Arena, but they were pretty similar.

Haha at having the measurements at one point. Only you koberulz, only you.

Overall ambience at PEC was better though.

The lighting and PEC is what made it a spectacle.

The fact that stadium wasn't bright blue also makes a massive difference.

Also the camera angles. Notice no under the basket useless baseline camera.

The camera on the baseline is much closer to the sideline.

Also a camera along the sideline. Both have a much better effect.

Yes the wildcats aren't the only tenants.

What would be the best color for all tenants given there is such a variety?

Bright blue or black?

WA state government were arrogant when negotiations took place. They probably thought Wildcats wouldn't make a go of it so well at the Arenea. Throughout they didn't take the club seriously. What they didn't realise is a well run basketball club for an indoor stadium is the primary tenant, your most stable income source.

Look at other venues Sydney Entertainment Centre purple seating catering to the Kings not acting like snobs to a good tenant.

Black definitely, a neutral colour. Blue isn't even neutral and means nothing to any of the events there.

I have no problems with the blue.. nice and bright new arena and makes the Red Army stand out more.

U don't want an arena to stand out on the inside. You are at an arena for a performance. Not the blue aesthetics ;)

Why haven't the Wildcats played an open air game yet? For the so called marketing darlings of the league this is one idea glaringly absent with such a stadium!

Reply #558959 | Report this post

That is a criticism that glaringly absent of any logic.

Players hated open air games when they had them in Melbourne 15 years ago, and they'd have to find somewhere else to put the scoreboard and lighting rigs.

Obviously on a 40c day they wouldn't open it even if it were planned. Like when it rained in Melb they scrapped it.

Thanks for the Vid, will watch later.

On the Venues, its funny. PEC seats were much nicer, suitable for an entertainment venue. Back in those days the Cats played in Black and Gold. Changed to Black & Red when Coke became their major sponsor in the mid 90's.

I don't know about the Wildcats being a "major" tenant. We play what ~15 games there a year depending. There's a LOT more concert events than that.
The problem with the Arena is that it was purpose built for one event, the Hopman cup. Despite the fact that the Hopman cup was conceived and always played at the Dome, a pressurised indoor venue, a condition of our keeping the event was building an open roof arena. Apparently its ok to play tennis on a synthetic surface, but you must do in in the sun. Not only did that drastically increase the cost, it necessitated much of the inside design.
And the shitty plastic seats.
Still, as a sporting venue, it is absolutely first class.

My old issue with the blue, is that EVERYTHING is blue, and the walls etc are a really bright blue. Seriously, some muted tones would be nice.

That said, I like the contrast with the red. If you made the seats red, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
