Australian School Championships

The Australian School Championships are on atm and in the Boys championship division there seem to be some pretty good performances by the higher rated players there.

Makauch Malauch - 29/16, 30/18, 37/12
Jack White - 19/14, 31/14
Dejan Vasiljevic - 29/11/6, 37/6/4
William Mcdowell-White - 14/14/5/3/3, 39/16/2, 43/14/4.

Overall standard might not be the greatest but its good to see the better players perform well and If Iggy park meets lake Ginnindera in the finals, that will be an epic encounter.

Article just gone online which gives good info on where DJ and J.White are going.

As for WMW, who knows. Talk he is taking visits this month but also mentioned yesterday he might go the NBL route.

I hope not though. Michigan State are said to be very keen on him and thats where Id go if I was Will. Being coached by the best coach in college ball, as part of his best ever recruiting class without even mentioning #1 prospect Josh Jackson who has yet to commit.

No brainer if you ask me.

I thought Louisville had the most interest in McDowell.
I can't see vasljevic going to lsu when they just signed Hayward. Probably depends on if Blakeney goes into the draft.
J.White I'd say will probably go to Boise. Same size and position as drmic.

Check out Sutton for Sydney and his stats
McDowell-White 37 shots in a 40 minute game ,now thats having a go.
Sutton 27 shots for his points.

^392 - Don't really understand the point you are making? Are you comparing Sutton to McDowell-White?

It would appear both boys had standout games.

However, it looks like a whole lot of robust defense is being played (Not) and most of the teams rely on 2 or 3 players.

White may struggle with the qualifications academically for NCAA , may see him go JC.

In reality the ASC don't have much depth in the majority of teams unlike age group nationals. Yes their are some sports schools who enter, but even in those teams few have more than two or three that would play in nationals if any ,and even fewer teams have any players that are in the higher level of AUS rep. So it stands to reason that the ones having these blow out games are the ones already in the elite system. If they went and played in their local domestic comp they would be the same. It's not exactly a level playing field. Even at the championship level. And that's in all age groups and genders.
Noticed they have now gone to using American school terminology introducing the "freshmen" division, which will probably attract some USA scouts,

It would seem from some of the individual scoring that defence is "non-existant".
Last week (playing for Queensland) in Adelaide at the Pacific school games against state based teams, Will McDowell-White averaged 15 ppg. At these School Champs he is scoring at over 36 ppg.
The same can be said about his team mates Offermans and Betts.
Offermans went for 10 ppg in Adelaide - here he is scoring 23 ppg and Betts went for 13 ppg in Adelaide - here he is also scoring 23 ppg.
Obviously no depth in defence for these School Championships.

Live stats must be wrong
In 24 minutes 105 shots have been put up.
DJ 27 of them. Is this possible?

Pacific School Champs are very poor, should not even count as any sort of recognised event.

ASC not much better. Even Champ division would not win against stronger u18 VJBL teams.

Any divisions below Champ are just another school camp. Great to see kids getting away and participating in basketball, but standard is very low.

Champs division at Schools this year was decent but below that is pretty bad. Nowhere near the standard of decent U18 VC or division one teams.

disappointed
Years ago

Attended the 2015 ASC in Canberra this past week and was really disappointed in the way in which the tournament was run.
- The standard of officiating was well below par for the championship division (boys)
- The stadium (Tuggeranong) was terrible. No air-con or fans. Hoops looked to be 20 years old, nets were broken. Toilets not cleaned etc. And canteen only open sporadically so no food available for athletes or supporters. lighting on the main court was terrible
- The opening ceremony was unorganised and a joke
- No floor wipers, teams asked to wipe the courts.
- The most frequent game stoppages for the refs to talk with bench officials I have ever seen
- There seemed to be many tournament officials running around but none actually doing anything to improve the tournament
- Teams had no liaison officer

From the 10+ national tournaments that I have experienced as a player/coach/supporter I would have to rate this one as the worst ever from an organisation point of view. Disappointing from BA and Basketball ACT considering the level of athletes there.

The on court performance was pretty good.
Dejan, Will McDowell, and Jack White all put on exceptional performances as expected.
There were some other stand out players that were on par with these 3... Makuach from Newington, Kuol from Lake G, Mayen from Concordia were all sensational.

Kuol was probably the difference for Lake G winning. When he played well it was impossible to stop them as you couldn't provide any help to guard DJ or White.

From talking with most schools the lack of preparation because of exams etc was probably the biggest problem but there was still some very high level play.

A big surprise was the lack of bigs at tournament. Still a lot of players in the 6'6 to 6'8" range but these were mainly long, mobile players and not the big post players.

Has next years host been released yet?

Why lake G is allowed these players is beyond me.Devalues the general performance of other schools.

^ Get over it. Firstly, it is not all about winning. For a lot of these kids, this will be the pinnacle of their sporting life. Let them enjoy it.

Also, Lake G don't win every year & they're only allowed to have 2 AIS/COE players.

Since 2000, Lake G have won 5 times, John Paul College 3 times, Caulfield Grammar 3 times, Sydney Boys High 2 times, plus three single time winners.

My son has participated in it previously and there was a genuine sense of excitement amongst his team to see the AIS/COE players play and even better to play against them & I sensed that amongst the parents as well.
