WA-WSBL 2017

some interesting results for week 1.
everyone will tell you that its a long season and teams will only get better as they bring in there more established players.
however you don't want to be playing catch up all season as well.
was surprised to see the redbacks go down to the flames with a full squad of players except clayton but had a good enough squad to beat the flames - well done rocko. watch closely to see if redbacks bounce back hard.
slammers and lightning was a yawn fest both playing loads of zone, might get a better gage this week on both.
Mandurah vs willeton both clubs play defence so was a tough clash
suns are one of those teams that need there imports on the floor and quick other wise they will be chasing tail - well done to eagles outhustled the suns .
hawks my pick will finish top 4 have height and scoring punch in the back court , senators will make the 8 - played the hawks tough.
wolves good win with a few keys girls away - cougars will be a surprise packet especially when the 65" girl arrives .
will learn more this week .

65" = 5'5" or 165cm, so I assume she is a guard.

"there will be a couple of big girls set to arrive in the coming weeks ."

The last thing Perth needs is even more big girls. *sigh*

another worrying loss to the perth redbacks.
hawks confirm that they will be a top 4 contender.
sentors ultra impressive beating the flames.
both Friday nights games were tight contests.
this is shaping up I think as one of the closest womens comps in a few years.

redbacks on the board. cougars 0-4 with all there new recruits . bourne, moyes, jones. eagles blow there game against slammers, lee with 40 + senators with their 3 americans looking tough to beat, joondalup and the hawks continue to impress. suns need king cleared, rockingham need there import here quick .lakeside rolling and will be super tough once the bigs arrive.

kisha lee 41, 12 & 5 illustrates the difference in standard between the WSBL and WNBL. the comp might be close but it is not very good.

Not much defence being played if an individual gets up 25 shots in a game - let's see how Lee goes against a team that can deny her the ball.

interesting article on john triscari and the cougars women .
there new import will suit up tomorrow night against the Mandurah magic which makes for a competitive game indeed.
shanara clark joins kersten Mitchell as the imports.
throw in recruits moyes, bourne, buckley and jones and I can see why he sees them as deep and a contender but it surely would be costing some $$
also he mentions there junior development, would there local junior development be comfortable with 6/7 new faces. not sure but good luck to john.

must have been a delay in posting that article cause that's not the imports name.

things are getting really interesting in the wsbl.
the comp is a lot more open then the placing look.
the competiton for the 6-8 positions is wide open.
I think the only 2 teams out of contention are east perth and the slammers.
both have been slightly disappointing , at the end of the day they have improved their rosters but still sit on the bottom.
Kalamunda, Cockburn, rockingham, wolves and perhaps redbacks are fighting out 6-8.
Cockburn have lost kersten Mitchell for a period unknown due to a knee injury. rockingham aren't playing well and the redbacks seem to be out of sorts.im tipping Kalamunda to get on a winning role and upsetting a few teams to sneak there way in to top 8.wolves have to much experience and talent to miss finals, much will depend on their performance this week. tough match up for first round opponent.
4-5 will be between senators and willeton and if redbacks find form they will be in the mix.redbacks are going to go one way or the other , can finish as high as 4th 5th or sneak a playoff spot.
lakeside will not lose many more games and perhaps none with their full roster. so will finish 2/3.
Mandurah have to many wins on the board 14 will finish 1.2.3 depending on finish. hawks to finish top unless something major occurs with squad.
COTY- smith ( hawks )
MVP- ali schagmeyer
MOST IMPROVED - Chelsea belcher

ALL-STAR 5

pg- gilday
sg- barr
sf- schagmeyer
pf- boag
c - burton.

champions ?? hawks,magic,lightning,tigers,wolves.

very important round of fixtures this weekend.
lightning vs senators could well decide 3/4 spot
both looking like facing either tigers or wolves in 1st round match ups.
the battle for 1st and 2nd done- both hawks and magic wont move. looking like facing either redbacks and cougars.
can suns /slammers muster an effort and challenge for a playoff spot ?
can east perth knock off the rockingham flames and perhaps get off the bottom with a couple of late wins.
very open competition this year it will come down to injuries and momentum coming into finals .
farnworth away for 4 weeks on NZ duties.
