Far out.... adding Holmen to that side. You have depth, experience, youth and good coaching. A very scary thought. I can only imagine hawks will be in high spirits with losing an import and gaining a guy like Holmen.

Purser now doesnt have guard the imports all the time and I'm sure DT will be in heaven being able to have an option like that pushing the ball to.
Parsons comes through with the goodes again with his recruiting all year long.

Curious to see the reception Holmen gets when he returns to face the Giants in Kalgoorlie. He did a lot for that club, and made a weak side very entertaining. The only league MVP in club history. Kalgoorlie isn't the nicest place for people of color though. Sure some people will be happy to see him again and some will be glad he is gone.

wtf is that?^

Kalgoorlie isn't the nicest place to people of colour?
1. This is 2018
2. He’s an American import in a regional town, trust me, he probably got treated better than the town Mayor
3. He didn’t leave Goldfields for another team. He was contracted to Hobart, injured his knee, waived his contract and now he’s back in the SBL.

I have no idea what you know about Jacob or Kalgoorlie, but he’s loved by that club. He’s from Texas, I’m sure he can handle his own

POWER rankings after round 3....

1st - Senators (last week: 2nd)
Our new no.1 team. A win over the Wolves this week will confirm that.

2nd - Wolves (last week: 3rd)
Big win over the Redbacks propels them back into the top-2.

3rd - Hawks (last week: 4th)
Slowly creeping up the rankings and could go no.1 after Holmen's arrival.

4th - Redbacks (last week: 1st)
Redhage has lost a step and he's no Loughton.

5th - Buccs (last week: 5th)
Tough away double this week will show us where they are.

6th - Lightning (last week: 6th)
Hung tough with the Senators and still have players to come in.

7th - Tigers (last week: 7th)
Still not convinced after underwhelming win over Slammers.

8th - Flames (last week: 10th)
Hire and DKD back in but how long will DKD be around?

9th - Eastern Suns (last week: 8th)
2nd-worst defence in the league would be a concern.

10th - Cougars (last week: 9th)
Ouch! Back to earth after 36-point loss.

11th - Eagles (last week: 11th)
Only team in the comp with just 2 players averaging more than 8ppg.

12th - Giants (last week: 12th)
Last chance this week against EP otherwise you would think their season is done.

13th - Magic (last week: 13th)
20 point loss at home to the Flames hurts.

14th - Slammers (last week: 14th)
More pain on it's way with a long trip up the freeway to Joondalup.

Hell of a pick up but isnt he coming of a serious knee injury?

They need to release BC and get another quality import.

How much more do Hawks need, to be a top 4 side? They have one of the deepest teams in the league, if not the deepest. Holmen's injury was 6 weeks, nothing major like first thought.
Why he is back playing? He's a professional, and wouldn't be shopping himself if he wasn't ready to go.

Why would they release BC when he's most likely going to be an unrestricted player in a few weeks. They can potentially keep him and sign another import/restricted player lol. Not sure how that’s not a win if it happens.

Yes PR is what Hawks have been banking on for 3yrs now.

Its horses for courses.

Keep waiting and if he gets PR then great you can go get another import, if not then your stuck with him as the 2nd import and not giving yourself the best chance at a championship.

BC is quite overweight. Would be a force if he was lighter and more athletic. Agree with him being an import is probably not the best because of his fatness. PL still looking very good and good to see them back around the top.

Overweight to play 35mins a game sure I'll give you that. 18-25 mins a game he is fine. He’s a role player now. Not many clubs have import role players but the Hawks started the season with two of them. Their team doesn’t require them to be what other teams need their imports to be. Hawks Aussies are pretty solid

Bucc's a great club and always competitive.

Reasons being:

Matt and Ralphy are solid locals!
Always get a fringe NBL player (Lewis,Akeponya, Ross)
Always get 2 x legit imports

Just hope they can get Wunders and Ralphy a chip before they retire.

They need to recruit 1 or 2 workman like Aussies from the city, no one flashy just workmanlike!
Easier said then done!

The wolves scored 52 in the first half, the Slammers only got 48 for the entire game. Super coach Catalano looks like carrying a donut again this year, they are going 0-26 I think. That means Catalano wins an sbl game about once every 10 years haha.

This is the wa state program for you, they are amazing at developing egotistical so called coaches who know nothing about the game and then get killed at sbl.

Voelkel will strangle Catalano within weeks, just watch.

I hardly think the results of Bunbury men is a result of the state team program. Black, Ellis, Bevo, Parker, Friday, Alava, Winter, Petrick, Parsons all successful SBL coaches and have been part of the WA program.

I would love to know which coach could turn that team around, a young local bench, lay and Weedon in their twilight years and 2 unproven imports.

The issue with Bunbury is their stud juniors always leave, imagine if that team had Hickets x 2 plus Richardson, Worthington and Gliddon.

Reply #683016 | Report this post

I will give you Parsons and and that's it The rest are the product of being developed elsewhere. They coached in the state program after this happened. Don’t try to claim Bevo, we are not stupid. You might be but not us!

Willo fan here,
We Don't look good this year, and idk if we r a lock for playoffs. We got lucky to come back against Mandurah yesterday, mainly because their guards couldn’t bring up the ball up against a mediocre press. If their import was there to handle ball then we don’t have a comeback either. We need another big guy! Pal had his way with our constant double and triple teams.

POWER rankings after round 4....

1st - Wolves (last week: 2nd)
Our no.1 team after knocking off Redbacks and Senators over consecutive weeks. However have Buccs on the road this week.

2nd - Senators (last week: 1st)
Had a chance to remain no.1 but failed against the Wolves.

3rd - Buccs (last week: 5th)
The big movers of the week. Son-of-a-gun Liam Hunt is a nice surprise back from college.

4th - Hawks (last week: 3rd)
Still missing the key elements to challenge the top-2.

5th - Redbacks (last week: 4th)
Needed overtime to get past a low-ranked Cougars line-up.

6th - Lightning (last week: 6th)
Big win over the Suns solidifies their top-6 ranking. Will push for top-4 with Alexander.

7th - Flames (last week: 8th)
A big upset over the Hawks despite missing Hire.

8th - Tigers (last week: 7th)
Needed a massive last quarter to overcome an import-less Mandurah line-up.

9th - Cougars (last week: 10th)
Probably the team getting the best value out of their Aussies at the minute.

10th - Eagles (last week: 11th)
Questions asked going into the trip to Kal. Were answered in the positive.

11th - Eastern Suns (last week: 9th)
Struggling at the moment and need Belger ASAP.

12th - Magic (last week: 13th)
Blew a 15-point lead at three-quarter-time but showing us some positive signs.

13th - Giants (last week: 12th)
I said last week their season was done if they lost to EP at home.... their season is done!

14th - Slammers (last week: 14th)
48 points? WTF!

Having seen a few games across the League already this season, it looks a possible 3 horse race - Wolves, Buccs & Redbacks.

Holmen helps the Hawks big time, but not sure they will have enough firepower through the squad.

Flames will push a few claims once they have their full content together, but likely a non factor come August.

What's going at Tigers? Such a proud and well resourced club but their MSBL recruiting seems to have missed the target. Ray's hard to replace, but expected a bit more from them so far.

Lightning with Alexander look like the value pick.

You will have access to be apart of testing where you'll see your rank and abilities compared to SBL champions, NBL champions as well as the NCAA. This is something never before done in WA!!

Get hands on coaching in shooting, dribbling, tactical and technical elements that other coaches aren’t willing to share."

“The WBA has landed and will be changing the way Basketball is played and coaches. This is stage one!”

To be working shoulder to shoulder with these three humans is something of a blessing. I get to call them family! They are three of the best of their craft in the world (hence why they consult, coach and compete on the world stage!)

How much sustained success would wolves had without Seb, Trian, and Huntington? They are all Stirling boys who wolves offered the $$$ too.
If they had all stayed at senators I'm pretty sure they would have won multiple championships. Imagine lineup of:
Trian
Seb
Ellis
Import
Import
Huntington
Litterick
Etc

And the Hunt, he grew up in Gero and moved to US for last 2 years of highschool so not sure of comparison to Weeden?
And has Ross even played for buccs yet?

Builkd rivalries, build crowds, grow product

Just have to keep it in check a bit, which will be Ettredge's challenge as a hot head.

I find Ettridge's comments interesting. No doubt the Wolves are a great club and develop their juniors well. They do have Stirling to thank also. It is much harder for the Buccs to develop juniors as they do not compete in WABL, however their current development academy is very good and will show results in time. I’m sure in 5-10 years time they will have many good local players.

I always agreed with the philosophy of never wanting to motivate the enemy. Etto may not agree but each to their own. I believe Etto is a very good coach at sbl
Level. Howver, he may have just given the Buccs the motivation for their performance.

As mentioned above by others take out Trian/Seb/Huntington plus who ever else he brought in from other clubs and then "developed them" see how they go.

His starting 5 at the moment doesnt have one Wolves junior. That is the only team in the league both men and women that do not have one home grown player in the starting 5.
Its crazy.
How can you put something to print like that when you dont have one local player in your starting 5!!

I don't care who plays for what team and what local club they're from. If a player wants to play for a coach/club, then so be it. It's a semi professional league, money is involved and people will move.

However, if you're going to ridicule teams for not developing their own talent (especially a regional team with about 150,000 less people in their catchment), then you best be sure that you have developed a strong local core yourself, and the simple fact is, Ben and the Wolves haven't.

Since the teams last championship in 2015 the starting 5 has consisted along the lines of:

2015 - CHAMPS
PG Questel (Kalamunda)
SG Iliadis (Stirling)
SF Salinas (Stirling)
PF Huntington (Stirling)
C Davis(Import)

2016 - RUNNER UP
PG Questel (Kalamunda)
SG Iliadis (Stirling)
SF Salinas (Stirling)
PF Huntington (Stirling)
C Davis (Import)

2017 - RUNNER UP
PG Ironmonger(Joondalup)
SG Iliadis (Stirling)
SF Salinas(Stirling)
PF Huntington (Stirling)
C Wright (Import)

2018
PG Sullivan(Import)
SG Ironmonger(Joondalup)
SF Salinas(Stirling)
PF Huntington (Stirling)
C Billups (Import)

Across 4 seasons and 20 spots for the starting lineup, the record shows:

Joondalup - 2
Other - 18

To help them out a bit, we can throw in Matacz, Maxwell & Smyth in the mix as starters to make it a 15/5 ratio.

Despite Huntington, Iliadis and Salinas no doubt identifying as Joondalup people after great service to the club, the core of their teams are not Joondalup juniors. However, credit where credit is due, as they have been able to retain that group of players over a period of time.

As for Liam Hunt growing up in the USA, a little research doesn't go astray. Liam was born in Geraldton in 1995, represented Geraldton at Country Champs from 2006 to 2011, represented WA Country at several national championships, then moved to the USA with his family to finish High School and go to College.

He has spent about 18 months longer in the USA than what most Aussie juniors spend over there.

Again, I don't care who plays where, just don't preach one thing when you have a history of doing the same thing yourself.

Little birdy tells me of a culture issue up the hill, players bad mouthing each other behind each other's backs. Coach telling players to mentally toughen up, bit rich when he quits when it all gets to tough and then comes back a week later when they beat Perth. Belger is needed ASAP to take some control and leadership.

Hawks def need to change things up a bit, its called defence. 109 points is terrible. They still scored 101. Holmen is apparently in town this week, that will shake a few things up and pull some heads out of backsides for some of the bigs.

With Vigz and Roberts coming in Redbacks quickly go to:

Wagner
Hussey
Barrow
Redhage
Vigor

Smith
Nelson (rumour)

The rest of the bench is very bad but that 7 is quite the #squad.

Redbacks have no depth whatsoever. If one or two of their starters are off, they are done. Nelson will 100% not be back in a Redbacks uniform. Vigor can't grab a rebound to save his life, having roberts and barrow will help his game. He can float around on the perimeter more.

Ridiculous call on the buzzer gifts Rockingham the game at the Church. Completely ruined a great game of basketball and the refs should at least be given a few months off.

Greg played good defense, stood in front of Hayden and took the offensive foul. No difference if it was in the first three seconds or the last - was there to be called and it was correctly done so. Given the borderline manslaughter assault that Lakeside were trying to pass off as defense on him on the post, i call that karma. From a neutral supporter though it was a fantastic game i agree. Some quality shooting from McKenzie and Ritchart. Almost makes me want to travel down to Rockingham for the rematch later in the season. Was that their new signing Washington on the bench yesterday? He made Hite look small - crikey moses

Hire flopped, ROFL I didn't know Monday night was stand-up night at Lakeside now. You guys go too far with the entertainment! Next thing you will tell us Prue is going to score double digits next week! To silly anon no 2, Hayden shot, released the ball then made contact with Hire resulting in a pushing foul being called and being in the team foul bonus situation, sending Hire to the line to ice the game. Instead of blaming the refs for the game, maybe you could blame individual shooters who went 4/16 from outside. Sure, he is a one trick pony so that's all he can really do but it also seems more logical than blaming a call which was there if you weren't wearing your purple-tinted glasses so hard. Its Basketball people, there has to be a winner and a loser. Sometimes its just not your day

Isn't winning the SBL about putting together a team that’s deep and talented? Pretty sure that’s what happens at most successful clubs. Recruitment is vital part of that. No one should feel like their position is guaranteed. That’s how bad habits form. Kind of like what happened in the previous 3-4 yrs at PL.

The 3x3 was streamed online via NBL - so that alone puts this 'mickey mouse comp' ahead of this bum SBL league that can't even put up highlights.

But seriously you lot take your SBL way too extremely. Ask half the people playing in the league and they couldn't tell you who won the SBL in 2001, 2010 or 2014. Heck they probably couldn't tell you who was in it last year. Players who play in the SBL do so cause they love playing basketball. Coaches and players take holidays during the season cause they know its not that serious.

You guys need to chill out. If a player hurt himself in a national 3x3 comp then relax - no different that him hurting himself at work seeing how is a semi-pro league and most of these guys have day jobs.

Commercial giant, pro sport structure with media team, new stadium that can hold 800 (or 2000 across corridor on Arena court 1), gets it right every year.

Travel costs way too high (would be a budget killer) but otherwise probably legit contender for a West coast entrant to the higher competition

I believe some conversations in play and a sponser talking about underwriting at least a high portion of the bid

Mark Worthington worked his way through the SBL legitimately before moving onto college and NBL and yes then onto the Olympics. The SBL was a legitimate part of his development and journey.

Whilst we haven't had a long list of Olympians coming through the SBL we sure do have some now that could potentially be in the not too distant future.

Luke Jackson and Luke Travers both just represented Australia at the FIBA Asia Championships and if their current form at U18 Nationals is anything to go by, the chances of them taking that step to the Boomers in the future is not unrealistic. Both have embarked on their SBL journeys this year.

Daniel Grida cut his teeth at the senior level in the SBL. Sure he got an AIS Scholarship early in his second year and he is now averaging 23ppg in SEABL but he is well and truly a product of the WA system and the Lakeside Lightning SBL program. I would not see it as out of the question that he represents Australia at the senior level at some point in the future.

Alex Ducas and Kyle Bowen have similar potential and also coming through their respective SBL programs.

WA basketball is in an exciting position right now and its great to see that next crop of talent emerging.

Don't miss the return of Jacob Holmen to Kalgoorlie, talking a big game after his surprise mid-season return to the SBL.

Our boys are ready to show Jacob and his new team just what our home ground advantage can do, so we need all of our loyal fans to come down to support the Giants. Loyalty is a big thing in the Goldfields, especially at our club!

We will leave the final words to our Chairman Jamie Crombie:
"I look forward to us offering Jacob the same advice that we like to give any opposition player that doesn't want to be part of what we are going at the Giants. We'll remind him of what it's like to play in front of the best fans in the league"

Davis is just doing what you pay a big import to do.
Viskovich has been a good young recruit averaging 15pts a game & the other starters in Horn,Diaz,Blanchett have been making good even contributions.
The young bench players especially Drown have been holding their own & with the imminent addition of Belger and once Timms gets the rustiness out, they will take it up to the top 4 teams and they have beaten 3 of the teams above them and took it up to the Tigers.Cannot afford to have lapses like against the Giants if they want to finish in the 5-8 spots. Wolves away this week will be a big test.
