Mount Gambier officially join Premier League

Great news for basketball both in Adelaide and in SA.

MOUNT Gambier Pioneers WILL compete in Basketball SA's 2019 Premier League after all, sanity prevailing today with the 10 existing clubs revisiting their previous decision to exclude the four-time SEABL champions.

Fears Mount Gambier would be a big fish in a little lake have further been alleviated with the South East-based club to additionally field a women's team alongside its highly-successful men's program which has been in limbo since Basketball Australia spiked the SEABL competition.

That left the Pioneers out in the cold, rejected by the new Victorian Senior Elite League, created to absorb the majority of SEABL clubs.

Basketball SA's 10 clubs needed at least seven to agree to the Pioneers' hasty one-year inclusion into SA's elite competition and this week's original poll failed when four - Norwood, Sturt, Southern and West Adelaide - voted no.

The overwhelming groundswell of support for Mount Gambier's inclusion forced the clubs back to revisit that vote and today it passed successfully.

Mount Gambier already agreed to the terms and conditions the Premier League clubs demanded, including diluting its SEABL-quality men's team, fielding a women's team, paying $4,000 per visiting club toward costs of the trip to the South East - $40,000 in total - and additionally meeting all expenses of any team which additionally had to travel in the event of a playoff game being staged at The Icehouse.

The decision to allow the Pioneers to compete in the Premier League in 2019 still allows the club to pursue its goal of returning to a higher level of competition if possible beyond next year.

Great result, would have been terrible to see a successful organisation crash and burn.

"Mount Gambier already agreed to the terms and conditions the Premier League clubs demanded, including diluting its SEABL-quality men's team".

So we're going to let you in, as long as you promise to not be very good. Haha.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn’t that 'dilution’ relate to the restricted players minimum? Isn’t there a different requirement from SEABL to PL? Surely the argument wasn’t "don’t be too much better than us!"

And isn’t most of that $40k coming from Basketball Australia?

I think you’ll find it wasn’t the ‘overwhelming groundswell of support’ which forced the rethink, it was rather the fixture changes which were the basis for at least two of the clubs rejecting the initial proposal. These were addressed and votes were changed.

I’m glad to see the Pioneers have a home, albeit temporarily. Hats off to the PL clubs. Let’s hope our PL teams can keep pace with the Mount! Looking forward to 2019!

Boti has got some things wrong especially the demand to dilute the team. As for groundswell of support forcing PL teams to revisit the decision, moves were already in place by some Basketball Adelaide members to work the issues with the "no" voters - this was proactive and not reactive.

And let's not forget that the initial vote still had more than half the clubs supporting the inclusion. Perhaps the Mount Gambier people critical of the PL clubs need to apologise to those clubs being supportive of their inclusion

Boti used to work for newscorp so getting facts straight would never have been a high priority

Much thanks needs to go those who continued to pursue a place for the pioneers to play after ba's ridiculous decision in August to cease Seabl and BV decision to exclude them from elite league and then big v.

BA and it's CEO cutting cheque’s so they don’t get smashed in court!

Next year expect Mount to apply for Vic league as BA won’t cut cheque’s once new CEO comes on board

SEABL clubs were allowed 3 restricted players whilst PL clubs are cut off at 2. In PL Imports are counted as restricted along with W/NBL or D1 players in other qualifying leagues around the world that plays above 35% of avaliable court time, 2 of these players max. The SEABL had 3 classes A (Imports), B (W/NBL >50% court time) and C (W/NBL 35%-50% court time). SEABL clubs could have 3 of these players with 1 having to be C class.

These %s change slightly with the gender of the player

Was the 2 restricted players rule in effect last year, if so how did forestville field an import and Teys and DJ? Or was there another exception made?

Majok and Teys will possibly be restricted. They're both around the 35% mark.

So do Forestville go with Deng who's been there forever or go with DJ who might play a total of 17 minutes in regular season?

Deng was at Mount gambier last year. Played one game then injured. Hung around for awhile before mutually agreed to leave. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him back there. Daly, Burdon, deng, import, import makes them tough
