Quality of Australian sports broadcasting

Personally, I think it's quite poor. But good, bad or indifferent, I thought we could use a thread to include examples of the current state of play.

From today's Perth vs Melbourne game:

- Pre match, Seb Costello and homicide discuss that homicide has heard about a potential bombshell about the wildcats lineup, with a starting player potentially missing. Presumably they're talking about Terrico White, who the wildcats Twitter already announced wouldn't be playing earlier in the day. The commentators don't disclose the name but say they'll ask coach Gleeson about it in the pre game interview.

Now this segment may have been recorded earlier, but if you know something is going to be shown live i think you should do better than that.

- Pre game, Seb Costello interview with Gleeson. He asks him how he feels given Perth has nearly, but not quite wrapped up top spot. Gleeson says he's not looking past today's game and trying to get a win against Melbourne. Costello follows that up by asking if he's started thinking about the Brisbane matchup. Gleeson replies "we're playing Melbourne today, aren't we?". Costello jokes that he believes do, but given Gleeson has come off a long flight maybe his mind is jumbled.

- half time interview, Costello asks cotton what he thinks about having "got the chocolates" over Ware today due to having 9 points vs 5 points for Ware.

Again, this isn't meant to necessarily be a negative thread but I thought if I'm going to have the opinion about broadcast quality being poor, I should at least try and back it up. Happy for good examples to be shared too.

I think it may be a case of the networks spreading the talent too thin. For example Sam McClure at the cricket and now Costello at the basketball or even Bruce McAvaney at every sport 7 has had over the last three decades. Unlike America we aren't big enough to have specialised commentators or reporters for every sport so they have to get by covering other things that may not be up their alley and unfortunately it shows sometimes.

Early in the Melbourne v Perth game, Hudson says to homicide "you've been quiet, who's your tip for today's game?" To which homicide replied "I don't know". Followed by awkward silence and Hudson saying "well, at least you're honest".

Yeah Cam Luke seems comfortable and no real uneasy pauses, understands a joke and seems insightful.

I don't think it's a case of basketball not being big enough to have its own identifiable hosts and commentators but moreso the networks wanting their stars to be identifiable from other sports and hoping that they can translate.

I know this has nothing to do with it but Adam Gilchrist at Formula One's atleast knows what he's talking about as a personality coming from an entirely different field.

It would be great if we could have and keep our own commentators as hosts (or atleast having the pretty hosts listening in at time outs and relaying messages rather than asking players generic questions, id rather that be from an 'expert' analyst.
