Key Performance Indicators

If you run stats on KPIs for junior basketballers across 8 hours of try-outs, you will make solid decisions or at least put yourself in the best place to get it right. Boards, blocks, shooting, turnovers. Pretty simple.

Do any clubs do this? Personally, I haven't seen it, but as someone genuinely interested in this area I would like to hear of any experiences involving a more scientific approach than that akin to the old blokes from Moneyball.

Mostly, across a few clubs, I have seen coaches trying to decide teams in a quite disrupted scenario where they are half watching / half chatting to colleagues without focus or any real imperial measures.

What’s the experience out there?

And how is 8 hours of tryout and sample size that guarantees correct kpi's for kids?

What is someone is injured? Or sick? Or your best 12 year old kid has a bad couple of days shooting. Do they get cut?

Stats would make sense as a reference point and should be very simple to implement. Most coaches spend less than 20% of try-out time actually focussing on players - mainly it's just a lack of concentration mixed with a perceived need to chat with colleagues. That’s based on actually timing some guys. It’s kinda disrespectful to the kids, but it is what it is and ultimately the coaches generally are just volunteers doing their best. What is disappointing is that some coaches are either students or guys / girls looking to make a career out of this.

So your kid didn't make the team you think he should have hey.

Clearly you don’t have any idea about stats. Just looking for an excuse for your kid. Well done.

Shooting is the most important factor, followed by turnovers, rebounding, and free throws. The article goes on to explain that each of those four factors is expressed at a rate: Effective Field Goal Percentage, Turnover Rate, Rebounding Rate, and Free Throw Rate. These have all the markings of good KPIs.

So how do you get a significant sample size in tryouts, and include non statistically relevant selection criteria measured as per above?

Critical point is effective field goal percentage, I've seen junior players over the years getting good raps for high scoring but there efficiency rate was woeful and actually taking shots from players in better positions. Good coaches work it out but there is a lot shit coaches out there just trying to build up there own profile.
