United like a "trust fund baby": Bogut

After Dean Vickerman said there is a lot of pressure on the Kings to win it all, Bogut responded by saying United are set up for success.

"I think there's absolutely more pressure on them," Vickerman told reporters on Thursday.

"They've been on top of the ladder all year, we're expected to get swept and they're expected to win the championship.

"That's a lot of pressure."

Asked if Vickerman was engaging in mind games, Bogut likened the part NBL-owned side to a spoilt brat who had been handed success on a silver platter.

"The pressure is on them," he said in Sydney on Friday.

"When you're playing for the owner of the league (Larry Kestelman) it changes pressure a little bit.

"It's structured in a way where they're going to be successful almost every year.

"We've been building this for the last couple of years and haven't had a whole lot of success the last decade, whereas we feel like Melbourne United are the trust-fund baby of the NBL.

"They're that kid that gets everything bought for them at a young age."

Although a bit rich of Bogut to act like the Kings are poor cousins when they bought the best player from United in the past off season

Bogut is right though, United spend up big every season, the only player they missed was Kay, Gleeson new how good he'd be.

Agreed with above. United are a trust fund baby but Kings are big spenders too so pot kettle black.

They both try to pull "if you succeed it's because you’re spending if we succeed it’s because we worked hard"

I’d imagine success requires both unless you’re Cairns who can scoff at both for their nonsense jabber

Sydney signed United's best player, 3 time all NBL 1st teamer and Last yr MVP Runner Up.

They also took Moller, who's pretty handy as a stopper off the bench and plenty of potential at age 25.

Bogut also spurned United, instead taking 500k a season plus 10% ownership of the Kings.

They've also got Didi Louzada. Who's paying his salary? United aren't the only team part funded by Larry!

Bogut is just taking the piss. Mind games all round

Undoubtedly true that the pressure is on Sydney though

Your team signed Melo and Long....

Stealing Ware = smarter than stealing Melo

That's why kings are top and United aren’t

Hehe

It's not so much mind games actually

Bogut is just pumping up the interest and getting a headline. It worked, so good on him

He knows it's all BS, but AFL pre season is ramping up, Coronavirus has the news cycle. Why not get some interest going

Bogut thinks like a businessman, he knows the game

[Stealing Ware = smarter than stealing Melo]

True

But misses the fact that we only stole Melo cos they stole Casper

If we still had Casper and Cairns still had Melo, no way Cairns would've finished above us.

Forget Melo. If we still had Casper no way we're 4th. Casper is one of the all time greats

Bogut outbid Larry. Now Bogut cries poor. Pretty hilarious really

Bit rich from Bogut considering Sydney's roster, but also like the way he goes bang with the whack on Larry/UTD lol

At the end of the day he's just spicing up what should be a good series.

I don't think he’s crying poor, he’s crying less richer/entitled

It’d be nice for some spice and rivalry.

I love his trash talk on and off the court.

Can't remember the player, but Bogut blocks him, then you hear on the on court mike "gotta do better than that if you want to play NBA"

Moller wasn't unhappy in Melbourne, he’s mate with vickerman, he just new that Melbourne always bring in big money players so his game time would be limited, his first season there he got more time due to Prather being injured 2/3 season.
Casper was totally pissed off due the money situation and Melbourne telling porkies, Sydney came in with a good offer after Melbourne low balled him and left.
Melbourne always wanted Trimble and Long and paid big money for both and got there men. McCarron is another who went there for huge money for a player of his standard.
Bogut is throwing in some spice, it’s great but he’s right, Melbourne pay roll is massive.

Is he wrong though?

What he said is true and it's exactly why many people dislike United.

As long as any team is owned by the league (even partially), there’s a massive conflict of interest.

What we know:

Bogut 1,000,000
Ware 800,000
Cooks 372,000
Bottom 5: 514,000

Then you have Lisch, Newely, Kickert and co...

'What we know' is that United are owned by the league owner and everything has been stacked in their favour since they came back into the league. That’s the issue here. It’s not about what the Kings are paying their players.

By the by, how good is it to have financially strong Sydney Melbourne Perth? Adelaide probably don't need the team cleaning the stadium anymore.

Stability is just so important

Maybe the extra million Joey was referring too was spent on security services to ensure players remained in their allocated rooms as per the coaches instructions? A service he obviously wishes the 36ers were able to afford.

[As long as any team is owned by the league (even partially), there's a massive conflict of interest.]

Brisbane was 100% NBL owned at one point?

Tasmania will be too

United is owned 25% by Larry these days, is it?

Hardly out of control

If no team was owned by the league, it would be boring watching shit teams with no money to spend on players. LK puts his money or brings in mates with money where it's required. Melbourne, Sydney, SEM , Illawarra are all in the league because of LK money or his mates. This suits Perth supporters because they like to win titles easy and don’t have to fight for them.

LK is doing what he has to do to grow the league. If that means league ownership of clubs in the short term to help them, then so be it. He sold down his share in United and sold off his share in Brisbane so it can be done.

Yeah, you'd never see an NBA team owned by the league temporarily and the league stepping in and interfering in their roster construction.

Yes but this is not the nba or USA. They have 350 million people and it's the second biggest sport in the country after the nfl. This is Australia with a lot less people and money. The nbl has never been better,

People will say it is a potential conflict of interest, but conflicts of interest are a risk in a lot of businesses - it is about how you manage it.

I would say there haven't been any clear examples of this coming to the fore. If anything, the team that gets unfair advantages are the Kings, with their Didi Louzada special dispensation signing under the Next Stars program.
