I'll eat Vegemite to play for Boomers: Thybulle

Matisse Thybulle has indicated he is interested in playing for the Boomers in Tokyo. Whilst he said he would make a final decision after the NBA season, he added that his Australian passport was "up to date".

____

Australia's hopes of a men's basketball medal at the Tokyo Olympics have received a major boost with Philadelphia 76ers rookie Matisse Thybulle saying he is excited at the prospect of wearing green and gold.

Thybulle said his Australian passport and citizenship were valid and he would even eat Vegemite to prove himself a true blue member of the Boomers.

"If that's what it takes I might but if I don't have to I'm not going to," a grimacing Thybulle, not a fan of Australia's favourite breakfast spread, said in Los Angeles.

"I think it will be an exciting opportunity," he said.

"My Australian passport is up to date.

"My citizenship is still active."

Thybulle said he would make a final decision on playing in Tokyo at the end of the NBA season.

"It's really exciting they have my back and they want me to play and be a part of it," Thybulle said.

I think that is cool and would love to see him on the team. However a lot hinges on Simmons. If Simmons can't make it but Thybulle can, it's not going to mean that much in terms of medal chances. If we can have both, plus the glut of our core, then you can get excited.

Delly or Exum and the last pf spot are the only debareable spots up for grabs.

Keep in mind that he's a defensive specialist for now. So he would still be a role player on the Boomers, rather than a dominant force. Still, would be very handy having him, he's already a very good defender at NBA level.

Not so sure about that. If you think about the Boomers' weakness with the current guard of players, defending dominant wing players has been our achilles heel. I think he'd get a good amount of minutes for the team. Put it this way, if Australia had a Mattise Thybulle in 2016 when Carmello Anthony started raining on us, we might be talking about a team that beat USA in an Olympic games right now.

Just because you're a role player, doesn't mean you can't get big minutes. I guess I was saying don't expect him to necessarily transform the team in his own right. He would fill a role - and as you point out, a very important one at that.

Likely squad will be...

6'0 Mills
6’1 Cotton
6’4 Dellavedova
6’5 Thybulle
6’7 Broekhoff
6’8 Ingles
6’10 Simmons
6’10 Bolden
6’10 Baynes
6’11 Landale
7’0 Bogut
7’1 Maker

possibility...
6’4 Goulding - injury to Mills or cotton
6’5 Creek - injury to ingles or Broekhoff
6’6 Exum - injury to simmons or Dellavedova
6’6 Green - likely beyond Tokyo but slim chance, a Thybulle replacement.
6’9 Kay - right in the mix with other pfs but playing nbl could hurt his stock with brown.
6’10 Magnay - likely beyond Tokyo but slim chance, a Landale, bolden or Maker replacement.

Can Cotton and Thybulle play on the same team with FIBA rules though? Both would count for the naturalized player spot, wouldn't they?

Makur is a dud and Bolden is no where, Landale isn't doing anything great in Lithuania.
I believe Cotton and Thybulle can’t be in the same side.

Cotton naturalised
Thybulle, citizenship before 16y.o. Came over at 2y.o, left 7 years later.
Maker refugee.

I think they can all play on the same team.

Kay is listed as 206cm 6'9, but looks more like 202cm, 6’8.

Am i the only one who thinks the olympics could be called off due to the mexican beer virus? Id say theres a 40% chance the whole thing is cancelled.

Unless something happens fast, at this stage I think it could be 80% chance of being called off.

Not cancelled, just moved to later on in the year. Or beyond.

On what basis is Bogut a surefire Boomer? He looks absolutely awful out there right now. Shawn Long is dominating him.

Cotton isn't naturalized yet so bare that in mind. But if he does get it before the Olympics he should be a no-brainer really. We don't have a more potent scoring option on the team outside of Mills.
