Gems Camp and World Cup

With the Gems camp happening next week there is clearly some gaps that need to be filled given most of the team just got beaten by the Newcastle Girls who kept them to 58 points. (Jade Melbourne 21 of those points)
That is on top of most of the COE girls being beaten by NSW in the U20 Nationals.

Major Issues from key players in the Aus 17s at Oceania

Potter Out ACL
Price Out going to AFLW as a Cross Code Rookie or Draft
Swain Played last week but didn't pull up for tonights game
Pollerd went for 0 tonight and in NSW final wasnt on when the game needed to be won tonight.
Melbourne and Deeble still in form
Evans in good form playing against her mum would have been weird

Unfortunately AFLW have begun a massive drive poaching other athletes from other codes and promising them the world. I know of about 10basketballerd that have been approached and half have no Afl exp.

They've had over 50 delisted, retirements plus 4 new teams coming in.
They are in need of 120+ players.

2 options

nbl1 + aflw

VFL or otherstate league + wnbl

To be fair, the Newcastle team are OK and helped by the inclusion of Katie Ebzery for 5 games including this one. Apart from Evans, Melbourne and Dunn... COE shot poorly, but definitely tough at both ends.

That is right the seasons are now running parralell and when one is currently 40% of the wage about to be 30% it is a no brainer. The kids in wnbl sit anyway usually so it won't be a problem for 5-6 years.
People like Lavey will probably continue with Ball and Conti etc will continue with AFLW

They are forced to make a choice, which isn't good for Basketball.

As mentioned another 120 spots on lists from next year and the AFLW will be playing curtain raisers to the men.

That isn't true, may have been at the start but the $ are there now.
Conti. Lavey. Newton. Downie. Pererra all off the top of my head, let us know who lasted a year, isn't many of them.
They bring them over on 2.5 times the money plus the ability to get some marketing $ and then still play NBL1.

Not many who make the switch have gone on more than 1 year

They are being offered 2 year contracts because of the expansion of ALFW going to 4 extra clubs and wanting to hold their players.

So all of a sudden it is $60k plus marketing plus NBL1

vs WNBL $26k and VFLW which wouldn't pay more than petrol

It is going to be a problem.

Melbourne would be a good footballer, Swain would be a gun

Cant imagine that anyone else apart from the AFLW club she goes to is making that decision.
BA and BV made kids like Taranto, Scrimshaw, Petracca, Florent, Pitonet, Owies even I think Pendles choose back in the day so the AFL aren't going to do them any favours in a competitve market.

Other girls to do well after leaving are Chloe Molloy, Tarni Brown, Jess Fitzgerald, Pearce, Hore, Cunningham

And most of them have been going now for the 5 years except the younger ones

Watch how many of those players get delisted. The talent pool is growing quickly and the turnover will be huge in 2023. The current disparity between players skill level is immense and will start to even out once all those young girls start to come out of 'the system' Auskickk through to state league and talent id camps + poaching

I believe 7 current nbl1 players atm are set to switch to aflw this year that haven't played previously.
Next year, wouldn’t suprise me to see 15-20 more gone.

10+ have been poached for clubs after competing on AJC u18/20 state teams this year and 2019

Watch how many of those players get delisted.

All nine or ten named are key players in their sides.
600k new grass roots girls and they account for 20% of all AFL memberships now.
18 sides at 30 spots so 540 spots in the league.
National juniors are looking at 80 spots with 16 imports and probably 5 vets per team (40) so realistically that leaves national level juniors fighting for 24 spots. Then take away the NZ non imports and it is way less.
That is on a third of the wage that AFL offers at the moment.
Matt Owies is a prime example of the AFL having the time to develop a national level junior player to a competitive AFL Player. Kids like Psatopolous and Price have been in the vic carnival system at u15.
Marte Kolina same thing, u15 carnival player going to Richmond next year, Tom WIlson, Greenwood and I am sure plenty of others.
If you are a national junior level player or high state you have the physical attributes to survive and in some cases they enter as one of the tallest on any lists. 4 Clubs in AFLW next year paying massive licence fees that will be reinvested into the development, it is a marketing machine

Given Herbie and Veal and everyone else work for BA and BA is the COE it is more likely than not.
BA have overstated the connection between the current and ex COE athletes in both the GEMS and EMUS. Where there is a chance to get as many COE girls into the trip as possible she is going to take the chance, she has to justify the COE existence. Particularly when they are playing Waratah

Well if they pick macdonald or Goodchild, you know it's bs. These 2 play around 2-6 mins a game.
Starters like Melbourne are playing 23+

Looking at the list now, I’d say it has to be...

Melbourne-Deeble-Loughridge
Swain-Brazel
Price-Borlase
Puoch-Dunn-pollerd
Rees-Evans

If price is out like the op stated, then you’d say Morgan is in.

Still very disappointing to not see paea, woollley out and also potters injury was a let down.

Melbourne-Deeble-Loughridge
Swain-Brazel
Morgan-Borlase
Puoch-Dunn-prior
Rees-Evans

I think you are right, you Will need prior in there instead of Pollerd to at least take it up to them physically. You only have Prior, Evans, Brazel and Borlase who like any type of physicality in the team. Pollerd is struggling to score at all in the last couple of Waratah games and National 20's, I think she will get through on height.

The next crop will be good once they play this and the next, maybe you take the hit and load this team up with the double bottom agers

Even if you are young and double bottom, if you like the physical stuff which the SA girls did in the 18s and the NSW girls did in the 20s you should fill it with them, the skill sets are comparable but we are going to get smashed on the boards. All the older 2002 bigs (Pollerd and Rees) are not physical at all. Will be a coach killer
