Salaries of NBL players

This article makes for interesting reading, and there were definitely some guys stealing money last year.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Sport. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Follow
The rapid growth of the NBL has put the league's top players on wages comparable to our AFL and NRL stars.

The Logue Down column can reveal the NBL’s top 14 earners from last season, which highlights the competition’s strength in world-class talent.

The figures obtained by News Corp include the total value of a player’s package, not just what is included under the softcap.

These additional costs include agent fees and marquee allowances.

NBA champion and Boomers veteran guard Matthew Dellavedova heads the list on $900,000 to $1 million, which includes marketing and ambassador roles.

Dellavedova used his one-year stint with United as a springboard back to the NBA, where he has signed a one-year deal at the Sacramento Kings worth $4.1 million (AUD).

He averaged a modest 10.59 points, 4.93 assists and 2.96 rebounds for United, but he provided the league with invaluable exposure.

Dellavedova is one of at least six players that took home over $500,000 in player salary last season.

SCROLL DOWN FOR THE LIST OF THE HIGHEST SALARIES

This season’s marquee player, Boomers and NBA veteran Aron Baynes, is on a contract worth between $750,000 to $850,000 at the Brisbane Bullets, which includes an NBL ambassador role. Baynes has already attracted two sellout crowds.

This highlights how the NBL has grown in quality in recent seasons, paving the way for player salaries to significantly rise.

Since 2016, the salary cap has increased 55 per cent, from $1.1 million to $1.7 million this season.

The minimum salary has also risen 74 per cent over a six-year period to help the NBL punch above its weight compared to domestic heavyweights like the AFL and the NRL that operate under significantly bigger salary caps due to multimillion dollar broadcast deals.

The NBL only has 10 teams and 120 players compared the AFL’s 18 team and the NRL’s 16 team competitions.

Despite this difference in depth and financial backing, the top 10 NBL players are earning between $400,000 to $1 million a season.

For context, eight AFL players are earning between $900,000 and a million-plus, with Richmond star Dustin Martin the highest earner on between $1.2 to 1.3 million over two seasons.

In the NRL, eight players also take home over a million a season, including two-time premiership-winning Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary as the highest earner on $1.3 million a season.

Some players on that list are robbing their employers. SEM have three on that list, no wonder they struggle as the rest team play for bottom coin.

I feel crook reading some of these salaries for last season. The rumour was Delly's 3 year deal with United was for $700k a season and turns out he was actually on $900k-$1 million. Oh my.

Yet more evidence SEM is being run quite poorly. The Broekhoff deal is bad enough big name coming back from a couple of years in the NBA and all that but what on Earth were they doing paying Munford that kind of money?

What were the JJ's doing paying Adams a guy out of the Belgian league that kind of money? Worse he wanted more money to come back this season!

Munford was a bona fide stud coming into the league, and he showed why. But only on select nights.

Adams was a stud coming in as well, and a new club would always need to pay overs to get people playing there. Their roster stunk in terms of talent last season. They weren't a destination of choice.

Humphries had better not be on near that kinda cash with United this season.

Adams was playing in Belgium the trainer-wheels league in Europe and no Tassie wouldn't have had to pay overs to lure him there because new imports don't give a shit about going to a less desirable part of Australia. If the money's right they'll live on Norfolk Island for all they care.

Humphries would've had to take a serious pay cut to get another contract in the NBL after his last two seasons at the Sixers. I dare say if he doesn't pull his finger out this season it might be next stop Cairns or Illawarra for him.

Before the Tassie gig Adams was off the bench for the Italian Serie A champs, behind Milos Teodosic and Marco Belinelli.
Tassie, brand new club full of unknowns and everyone kinda 'knew' they'd suck. Wasn't referring to the geographical location so much.

"Adams was playing in Belgium the trainer-wheels league in Europe"

Jesus! Adams has played in VTB United, Euroleague, Italian Serie A, Basketball Champions League, Turkish BSL, Eurocup and Spanish ACB. That's a roll call of Europe's best leagues. One league he's never played in, however, is Belgium.

I'd be a little suspect about this list. Might be accurate, but why does it stop at 14? What a strange number. Who leaked the info and what are they trying to get out of it?

Maybe it's just cos no one gives a crap who's on 250k

Certainly paints United in a bad light, spending that much on Delly. Likewise SEM with Broekhoff

7 of the top 14 in Melbourne, damn.

I'm assuming United spent 700k (widely rumored on here last year) and the remaining 200-300 was NBL ambassador etc

A bit high

I'd be interested in seeing a detailed analysis of the value guys like Baynes and Delly bring to the NBL and United though

Article is not accurate at all. It is Cleary missing Kai Sotto's monster multi million dollar deal.

That's why United were happy to see Delly get signed by Sacramento. Although they didn't spend the money too well from the looks of things!

Let's be honest if this was a list of the highest paid players from last season then Vic Law definitely is letting his injury plagued career status affect his earning potential as he was quite a good player in this league.

Surprised that Finn Delaney and Yanni Wetzell weren't on the list but that explains why they went to Europe for more money I guess.

Thank you NBL for leaking this, it should be made public every season

The Broekhoff price tag made sense at that time, when people thought he'd come here and be a laser. I just hope he's not on anything near that today.

I think it's just last year and they’ve associated with this years’ club.

Ie Humphries that’s probably his 36ers pay packet, but they’ve just said he’s at United now.

You’re right about them just wanting to mention they pay Delly lots though, had to come along with a puff piece

Given how far SE Melbourne fell off the perch once Broekhoff got injured, it would only reaffirm his claim for good money.

A couple of things from this and the cap spend to take into account

Teams with 3 imports can only have one marquee - explains why United's and SEM cap figure aren’t that high.

Asian players and next stars don’t count against the cap - Zhou Qi wouldn’t have which is why SEM were below the soft cap, same with Jessup and Illawarra.

If you don’t play all 28 games only a proportion of your salary counts against the cap - Humphries money in hand compared to cap figure would have been low. Same with Broekhoff.

Imports can’t be marquee players - therefore Cottons full salary counts against the cap which explains why Perths cap figure is so much higher.

Would be interested to see the physical spend compared to the cap figure. On the outside looking in Sydney, Melbourne and SEM seem to be able to utilise the rules and save on tax the best.

"therefore Cottons full salary counts against the cap which explains why Perths cap figure is so much higher"

It depends on whether the figures in the article posted by OP are Perth's actual salary spend or deemed figures for salary cap purposes.

The article doesn't state whether they've adjusted the numbers for imports for the differences between the deeming rate used to calculate equivalent AUD$ values of USD$ contracts for salary cap purposes. (See "Explaining the NBL Salary Cap System", 9 June 2019, written for nbl.com.au by Liam Santamaria.)

If the article did adjust for the import salary deeming process, then the actual AUD$ spend for Cotton would be higher than the article states - between 20% and 47% higher. i.e., actual spend somewhere between $1.08 million and $1.32 million. (See historical AUD-USD exchange rates at https://www.poundsterlinglive.com).

This range is somewhat higher than the article states for Dellavedova.
