@bcat - It will be interesting to see how wide Nyberg opened his wallet LOL Biggest budget overall in NBL1 Central and probably other divisions as well. You would think all the cash would have gotten you more than 1 win this season and 6th on the ladder.

Flames vs Tigers

Flames would be looking forward to McBride suiting up, but should be too good against a young tigers outfit. Norwood by13

Eagles vs Sabres
Sturt lost a tight one against North, their bigs need a mammoth effort against the big Eagles, Forestville to continue the win streak, but never count out Sturt if they get hot from the perimeter. Eagles by 13

Lions vs Panthers
Starling and DJ should feast on the Lions, expecting Starling to have a 20/20 game. McVeigh had a big scoring game, could he continue that form. South by 22.

Warriors vs Mavericks
Warrior's havnt skipped a beat, Mavs have actually been decent so far this season but Woodville should have too much depth, Warrior's by 17.

Rockets vs Bearcats
North are playing well whilst West are trying to work things out. May have missed it but haven't seen any official Olbrich signing. Without him they're a donut team. Could go either way depending who plays, flipping a coin and West by 2.

Power Rankings
1/2 Forestville/South
Have shown so far to be the ones to beat, can't really separate them for now. Forestville recruiting in the backcourt to help Doyle makes them more rounded. DJ can score 30 in his sleep in this league, but as seen in previous seasons and with Sixers, does he have the heart to battle adversity. Starling on the other hand will always battle, and those 2 can compete with Forestvilles bigs. As mentioned, will McVeigh be their wildcard and/or Hoppo continue to grow as a player to get enough points on the board.
3. Woodville
Knocked off West in a tight opener, and did what needed to be done against Centrals and Southern. Will see how they go facing tougher competition.
4. North
Have got to put them above Sturt based on last week. Getting a good contribution from across the board with no real standouts.
5. Tough loss against North, otherwise could flip them here. If Dowdell can compete against other teams bigs and nullify them, Sturt could rise higher. But there's a reason he's on his 3rd team in as many years. Still, their guards are good and always a chance to get hot.
6. West
Hardly impressive despite the money rumoured to be spent. If Olbrich comes in they could climb the rankings. Big problem will be nbl preseason. Will Drmics new team allow him to play out season, Deano will probably fly him in for finals. Same for Olbrich. And what if Adelaide is playing a preseason game interstate, out goes MM. Big gamble by West IMO.
7. Norwood
Another team that should rise in standings with an inclusion, but just shows their depth isn't quite there. Need to beat Centrals this week to keep treading water. Congratulations to Daniel Webber for his 300th this week, amazing achievement.
8. Centrals
Only putting them here because of the last 2. Wouldn't be a huge upset if Eastern beat them down the track. Rupert's blind faith with his son could be their Achilles heel. But if a team above them is having a tough night, they might sneak an upset here or there.
9. Eastern
Finally, the Mavs are off the bottom rung. Depend way too much on their imports, hopefully some stability will start paying off. But they did only beat Southern by a few points so Mavs shouldn't get too excited.
10. Southern
Tough start for a rookie coach, and a lot of new faces. No real leadership out there for this young group. "Riding the Pine" Green should be that veteran but has continued his Norwood days not being able to play a full game. Brought in Jimma and Johnson late, talented but always had others above them in teams totem pole. A rebuilding year, their budget probably a tenth of their glory days. Will battle it out with Centrals and Eastern for wooden spoon.

Andrea Aquino - import
listed at 6'9
missed college career due to health issues, think it was heart problem. No 7 ranked player in the country out of high school.
footage shows she has a jump shot but we will see.

If she is fit and mobile helps bearcats as south killed them inside last week.

I don't understand how you can recruit someone that didn't play a game in college with a heart condition and then expected to play in NBL1. I think she'll get left behind in each transition of the game. I guess this will show whether the Rockets can rise above it - but even without the 6'9" recruit - Bearcats will still win. Bearcats probably will only put her on the court for a few minutes at the most.

Really curious seeing how she sat out her 4 full years in college and only hit the court in a symbolic final senior game. Would be a miraculous surgery to get a Dr to sign off to play, especially in this league. Hopefully nothing happens, but would be an intimidating sight in the paint.
West really splashing the cash about.

Can we just spare a moment for this historic fall southern have seen.

5/6 years ago their team lost the GF to West, their u18s won state champs, their u16s played in the GF against North and their u23s were winning the social comp that was u23s.

Southern looked poised behind big spending and a good top end jnrs program to be good for the future.

The spending dropped off (documented on this website, but maybe not entirely factual), but now they can't even keep jnrs. From their U23s,u18s and 16s from 5/6 years ago, 0 players are in their program now.

Even when Dave took over from Dean, the team was mostly tigers kids with 2 imports added.

The team now consists of a C grade import, Jimma and then C grade recruits from other clubs.

And to compound their jnrs program seems also to be falling apart.

Girls teams fading away, barely putting in a u18s team. The boys side still has large numbers but not really seen as any chance to compete week to week.

Is there a path for them to even get back to a competitive program?

I doubt Green would be even getting paid at Southern and he's not even proving value for money as he's terrible. Their budget must be pitiful, but a result of belt tightening after those big budget teams. Scott's rolled the dice bringing in a lot of Sudanese kids he had at Woodville, but there's a big step up to playing against men. They pushed Norwood last night, so they seem to be improving though. But Norwood were dad's army, Lycett and Webber in his 300th played a full game I believe, nearly old enough to be some of Southern kids dad's.
As for juniors, North are in the same boat. A couple of years ago they were top in most boys div ones. Then they bring in a dream team, ruffle a few feathers, suddenly it's unraveled. And what a coincidence that Forestville boys who were bottom in boys suddenly get an influx of players from other clubs with the arrival of dumped north coaches. And a coincidence that the all star coaching cartel had a few that came over from Southern when things looked stormy.
On a separate topic, I wonder how much West men's are spending on their team this season?

Southern our still paying off debt from the big spoending of the Nyberg era and success clearly came with a lot of financial pain for the members and current NBL1 squads.

Lets hope for West sake they dont go down the same path!

What a demolition job by Bearcats last night. Didn't look like North would even get to 30 at one point. Rockets have looked quite reasonable in all their early games but last night was like watching a div4/5 team scrimmage div1. Bearcats class showed and the execution was clinical as McCarron and Drmic showed the difference between NBL1 and NBL level and did whatever they wanted early. Bearcats defence not allowing Rockets inside the paint and with lack of 3pt shooters and ball carrier they had no path to score. Durrell McDonald out with injury for North was a big blow, he has barley subbed out in previous games and does ball carrying and defence on opposition guards, not that it would have made a 50pt difference. The truth of these teams is somewhere in the middle, if West is that good or North that bad.

Just Saying,

Nyberg wasn't responsible for the club not recovering $100K worth of fees over multiple season.

That's on the club.

I think Scott Freer was brought on to help revive Southern Tigers juniors issue as he was the JDO at Warriors but it came at the price that he was able to coach NBL1 - which shows he isn't quite up to the job at hand yet. Green doesn't even look like he even wants to play so I'm sure you'll see some interesting changes over the next couple of weeks.

Bearcats did come away with a great win. Shut Koop down to only 11 points and only 8 points coming off the bench. Power rankings for North just dropped to about 7/8 on the ladder. The sad thing is Rojo blasting the refs during a time out when he clearly needs to be having that conversation with his boys. Refs can't put the ball in the hoop for them. North come across Warriors this coming weekend and I'm sure they will be hungry for a win.

I heard Dean has paid in the upwards of $70K+ which is considerably higher than any club + he has also contributed to the women's side hence why they have a 6'9"er. Where is Nyberg heading next? Maybe looking for a coaching position at the 36ers? Assist coach position is vacant right? LOL
