It really should have been 3-0 instead of 3-1, as the Japan goal was actually a foul (Japanese player made contact with the Australian goalkeeper), and even the Egyptian referee admitted about 5 mins later to Schwartzer that he did stuff up on the call... it should have been waived off as a no-goal. But top stuff to our socceroos... really did us proud... and showed to the rest of the world not to underestimate us... we will be ready for the challenge.

Kent

It means that we are ranked No. 42 in the world. All the teams that are in our pool are ranked Brazil (1), Japan (18), and Croatia (23).
To have any chance of progressing through to the next round we need to get at least a draw, hopefully a win. Another win would guarantee progression.
The top two teams in each pool go through to the next round.

Never been prouder to be Australian than today. Good to see so many people of different backgrounds on television united wearing the Australian colours, both on the field and supporting around the country. Football can do wonders for uniting people and it's great to see a multicultural country like Australia coming together for such a special moment. Makes you wonder why stuff like the Cronulla riots ever happen when so many different people are proudly united as they were last night. Hopefully that can continue!

If Australia gets out of their group, it seems like they'll probably face either Italy or Czech Republic in the next stage. They could pull something out against Italy, but I think it'll be the end of the line if they face the Czech Republic. They were awesome against the #5 ranked USA, destroyed them 3-0. Before it started, I picked the Czech Republic to win, and I hope they do because I'm sick of Brazil's dominance, but I still want Australia to do well! Go Socceroos!

Kent - No, That is just their Ranking points and how much the have risen or dropped since they were last published.

I have no idea why somebody decided to posting the entire world rankings on here. Could have at least posted some sort of comment with it.

Was exciting to watch. I was dreading with 10 minutes to go they we were gonna end up leaving the world cup once again goaless. All Hail Tim Cahill.

If Australia get into the 2nd round, the success of the socceroos will not just have a positive effect on soccer, but more than likely, every major sport in the country, that including basketball... the Boomers will finally see that they too can compete and be the giant killers, if they want to and have the desire to kick some ass instead of having their asses kicked.

I wish I could share your thoughts on that one John. But If they do get thru to the next round I cant see it having a positve effect on Basketball. I would see a lot of kids choosing the other round ball over Basketball, not just in participation but in attendence for the A League over the NBL, putting even more pressure on struggling league.

Its not like our Basketballers are ranked 42 in the world either.

We are ranked 3rd in the world Overall for Men and Womens Basketball.

Saying that tho, I would still love to see us get thru, We just need to be prepared for an uphill struggle ahead.

I think it's safe to say Tim Cahill deserves more publicity and hype than Harry Kewell. They are both carrying injuries, so Kewell can't use that one as an excuse. Kewell is wonderful, but Cahill is better. I would have said that before the Japan Game as well. If Guus Hiddink is God of Australian soccer for getting us to the World Cup finals, then Cahill is now officially Jesus.

John Aloisi is once again doing Adelaide proud. He deserves more respect for his great contributions. 25 goals from 41 appearances for his country is a fantastic record, but he always seems like he can only just manage a bench spot. Either way, he's a legend!

Go Socceroos!

What an awesome game a truly great night for Australian Sport. It would have been easy to chuck it in given that disgraceful first goal which the ref has now admitted was a foul.

True G & D Cahill Kennedy and Aloisi were all awesome when they came on. We probably only need 1 point to go through now and set up a meeting with the Italians which would be HUUUUGE

The USA team is just a over-hyped bunch of wannabes, who were extremely lucky in 2002 by the teams they had to play in their draw and then playoff matches.

Australia is a classic example of a team who plays like a team and thinks like a team usually wins like a team, and deserve to get to the 2nd round, and if they do, i believe they more than likely will either defeat Italy... or at the very worst, maybe lose by a 1-0 scoreline / penalty shootout against Croatia. Australia is now getting the attention it has deserved, and more importantly, the respect that goes with it! Even the #3 ranked Dutch team say we can play with the best of them and the #1 Brazilians say they respect our game... now that says something, wouldn't you have to admit? Expect nothing short of hysteria if Austrlia manage to get past Brazil with a draw or a win!

1 point needed..doubt it.

Assuming a win result in the Croatia/Japan game, for either side(a draw in that game is what we all should be barracking for), then its still game on for the last spot.

Do not be surprised if we get something out of the Brazil game though.

Overconfidence by Brazil might just hurt them.

Watched nearly all games and agree with the post re the Czech's, definately looked the best to date.

Need Brazil to win tonight.

I actually LIKED watching a soccer game for the 1st time ever! great Aussie spirit, no reason why the boomers cant summon something like that against higher ranked teams.

One of the best days of my life, for most of my life I didnt think I would see Australia make a world cup, to see them firstly score a goal and then secondly win a game, it felt incredible. Just such a great way to pull people together from all parts of the world.

We will need more than 1 point to advance to the next stage. Getting a win/draw against Brazil would be an incredible result. Brazil are great at keeping possession and this will frustrate Australia as they wont get too many opportunities to score. I think Brazils pace will cause a lot of problems for our defenders (which i view as the weak link, note japan game) but expect considerably better fluency and finishing from Brazil. I get the feeling people under rate Croatia considerably which is a big mistake. They play a more physical style of game which can unnerve opponents and are good at completly shutting down opposing attacks. Results with them in this group will be a bit more unpredictable as their ability to kick goals may prove to be their biggest concern.

Re Kewell: he has the ability to win matches for Australia, expect him to peform better if fully fit. Back in his days at Leeds United he was a considerably better player than Cahill is now. However I think Harry peaked a fair while ago now while Cahill is still improving and has the potential to be a lot better than he is now.

Just my 2 cents worth.
