Funny Game thread: Slingers vs 36ers

So far, it's NBL stats vs NBL stats. Scores level!

00:00 SLINGERS - [0] N. NBL stats enters the court
12:00 36ERS - [0] N. NBL stats enters the court
20 minutes until game time (7:40 Singapore time)...

Agreed. A poor start against a team we should beat. Losses like this one mean that we now MUST beat Wollongong on Sunday.

Any boxscore predictions anyone? I'm going with Ng 2-7 FG, Nash 2 points, Hill less than 10 minutes, Copeland 3-12 FG.

Good for Singapore I suppose, but Jesus we have to be winning those games if we are going to get anywhere this season.

Alternatively, given the number of new faces, it might take Adelaide 8-10 games to figure out how to play with each other.

Defence win Games
Years ago

Hi , I went to the game. Starters for Adelaide were

Brett
Farley
Lanard
Majstro
Horvath

Before the game there were very few people but in the last 10 minutes before the match a good crowd started to build up so janet's numbers may in fact be a bit on the low side though it is very difficult to judget in the big stadium and also there were clearly a lot of younger kids who most likely were not counted in the official numbers . This is typical Singapore , people turn up just in time but it was a strange feeling compared to being at the DOME.

We can all have our views about why Adelaide lost but in my opinion the team only has one driver and that is Brett.

Re other players ( stats from Prowess Basketball-game box score)

Darren ( 7 points -5 rebounds) went to the basket and had a good part to play in particular in the first half.

Despite 14 points Willie ( 1 rebound, 3 fouls and and 1 AST plus 3 TO) was nowhere to be seen when leadership was needed.

The Maher - Horvath combination was the most positive you can say about the 36 ers .

Mark Nash will wish to forget this match ( FG=0/5, 3pt =0/2, FT=1/2, TR =1, ) and maybe Copeland should also do the same ( FG3/10, 3 pt =2/7 , 8 points, 4 PF, 2, Rebounds, )

No idea why Brad Hill only got 5.16 minutes ( 0 point) but he seems to be the chosen person to sit on the bench as soon as he does something wrong .

For the Slingers Chandler ( 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and strong ability to put the ball on the floor) was a surprise. Aaron Trahair woke up in the second half and scored 14 points overall when it counted but the real strong players were Melmeth ( 12 point, 8 rebounds, 3 assists,4 steels), Ben Knight ( 19 points , 6 rebounds) and super clown Mike Helms ( 19 points, 8 rebounds despite also 5 TO).

The Slingers have 2 good - very hard working and up tempo PG's in Brad Davidson and Jeremy Kench.
While the stats do not show it , I felt that this ability to rest Davidson and keep the up tempo was a major difference to the 36 ers combination totally relying on Brett ( 40:41 minutes).

I wouldn't read too much into the loss. New team, have heaps to play for in their first ever game. Different conditions up that way with the heat and humidity - their players have been able to train in that for weeks whereas we haven't.

Plus it's only the first game of the season. It's a pity to lose any game, but I still give us every chance against the Hawks this weekend.

we were missing no players due to the world champs. we had one of our imports here all off-season. we had nash available with no ABL team. we didn't have anyone (don' t count sutton) at the ABA finals. we had one injury to wheeler, and a minimal one to cooper, while other squads have had far more issues. we had the blitz and three full pre-season games .

While I agree that the result is disapointing championships arnt won in the first few weeks. As long as we see improvement from game to game as the team gets used to playing with each other then I can see us in a good position at teh end of teh minor round. Thats when we have to step up to the plate and play our best ball!

In saying that Id like to see Hill getting more court time - lets hope last night was just a one off and his time on court will increase with Lanard being used more as an impact player in spurts off the bench

The problem is that we have ten guys that can all play. You can't give everyone time. Phil tried to give all ten players court time time at the start of the 99 season too but realised about 4-6 weeks in that he couldn't. Maybe his memory is short and it will take him 4-6 weeks to work that out again. Problem is who don't you give the time to? Probably depends on who you are playing but maybe 2 of Ng, Hill, Cooper and Nash need to play 5 mins or less to get a good rotation going? Or are we too old to have an 8 man rotation.

Reply #97037 | Report this post

Nash should be playing no more than 10-15 minutes a game , simple . In my eyes he is done as a quality NBL player .
Cooper in very small bursts .
Farley should produce more for his minutes , if not sit him .
Hill needs the confidence of the coach and team to shine .
Ng , if he's orrnnn !! he stays on .
Maher and Horvath , don't need to speak here .
Mastro , dependant on match ups and early to judge .
Copes , should produce 12 , 3 , and 3 in 20 minutes .
We have an interesting blend this year i just hope that all the lads have been assigned appropriate roles and they understand this . If we have a team 10 deep fighting for minutes , shots , etc , all playing loosey goose then
things will get very ugly , very quickly

For those who don't know Smyth shops at the supermarket I work at.

Next time he comes in, I will apply the same standards he applies to himself in his job to my job.

I will get a quality tomato, and try to sell it to him as a potato. When he refuses to buy it as a potato, I will put it out the back and not let it see the light of day. I will then pull out an old rotten tomato, that it sill ok in patches but mostly is useless now, and try to sell it to him over the ripening tomato out the back which will be great with a little sunlight. This will be at full price of course.

When he complains that the quality of the food is terrible, I will reassure him that despite the fact we have had months to get our quality in order, it will be fine in 4 to 6 weeks, and he should keep buying our rotting food anyway. Don't let the fact that you may die from food poisoning in the 4 to 6 weeks before we get our house in order discourage you from shopping with us.

Also the price of everything will be double the cost of the local competitor, because we didn't send someone down to see what they had to offer.

Message is, Smyth I want to see a team next Wednesday with offensive sets which gets us in a position to shoot higher than 31% from our starting back-court. I want to see a rotation that gets Maher the rest he needs to be effective and injury free all year long and gives time for Brad Hill to develop. Doesn't matter if things don't go to plan, as long as a system is in place to maximize our player's talents, and keep an eye on future development. Unlike last year.

I posted last week after the trial game that it looked good this year because our game would not stand and fall on the basis of the performances of Maher and Farley like it had for the previous 2 - 3 years.

Game 1 of the new season and absolutely nothing has changed. Very sad. We need some players to stand up and start giving us something. I am sick of watching the lack of consistency that has characterised the Sixers for a number of years now.

It is time to stand up a play with some passion, and not drop soft games like this one.

anon #97042 and DC - very good posts I agree with pretty much all you have said. I don't think Nash has what it takes any more, but I do think you are expecting maybe a bit too much out of Copes. 12, 3 and 3 in 20 minutes is a massive ask, I would think more like 8,3 and 2 is realistic.
Statman I also agree with you - I think some people are getting a bit ahead of themselves so early in the season. I am fully confident that we will be in the mix come crunch time.

Also, Brad Hill getting 5:16?, great investment in the future there!! Maybe next year, he can join Forman in NZ, Ingles and Holmes at the Dragons or Newley at the Crocs and get the opportunties that surely he should be getting here.
