Funny Sixers vs Cairns game thread

Live Scoreboard on Taipans.com

or go to NBL.com.au for their scoreboard.

NBL scoreboard has better stats (points, rebounds, assists and fouls), but the Taipans board might be worth checking if you suspect the NBL deal is off.

Rychart has 6 and 2 early in the game. Holmes 5 and 1. Cooper a couple of early fouls. No scores to Maher or Farley at this stage.

Cooper off, Rees in. Mee has 3 points for the Taipans. 7-11 Sixers way. Nash in for Holmes. Hill in for Farley, Forman in for Rychart who had 4 rebounds in the first 6 minutes.

Hill hits the 2 for 7-13, making him 5/19 for the season from the field. Nash makes 2 and draws a foul on Mee. No luck with the free throw, rebound to Mee. Cairns come up empty, and Hill adds another two -- 7-17 early lead to the visitors. Farley comes in for Maher as Stewart hits two FTs for the Taipans. Low scoring early effort from the Snakes who will want to get a wriggle on (audience groans).

Quiet patch from both teams. Rees out for Coops and Nash replaced by Holmes. Hill makes a free throw after being fouled by Grabau, and then hits the bench as Maher comes back on. Darnell scores two, Holmes fouls him and Darnell adds one. 12-18, 2:24 left in the quarter.

Maher (3) is matching Thomas, Decker and Cattalini (3 combined) on the boards!

12-20 after a couple of FT from Willie.

Snakes hit a couple of threes to make it 20-26.

That's the end of the first quarter it seems.

Rychart 8, Holmes and Hill 5, Farley 4, Cooper and Nash 2. Mee 6, Stewart 5, Thomas 4.

Sixers up 47 - 44 at the half.

Dusty racking up with 17 & 11 at the half, fairly even spread for the rest of the team. Maher been quiet for 2 pts, 3 rebs and 1 ast. But seems to have held the snakes guards to limited numbers.

Should be a good second half, hopefully Cat stays quiet for the rest of the game.

Obviously this one could still go either way. Dusty has been great, but I think the worst thing for Cairns right now is that Maher has been soooo quiet! Brett will definitely make him self a factor in the second half. Adelaide shoukld be able to run over the top and have a healthy lead by three quarter time.

Has Brad Hill been back on since that first quarter? Four Taipans in double figures compared to only two Sixers.

Still ahead, 70-79. Holmes has just been on a little 6-point run.

78-82. Maher and Cooper head to the bench for Farley and Forman. NBL scoreboard says that Taipans have 6 players on the court...

Holmes moves to 19 and 9. Farley hits three. Up by 9, Cairns call for a timeout.

01:44 TAIPANS - 3pt basket made by [20] G. Boodnikoff 85 92
01:05 TAIPANS - 3pt basket made by [13] D. Mee 88 92
00:29 TAIPANS - Basket made by [33] M. Thomas 90 92

Looks like this was a 24 second shot clock violation - wonder who for taipans took the last shot with 5 seconds? Have to be Mee or Cat if he got open.

Ok so the home town scorebench thought that the clock had expired - unfortunately as far as I know the referees make that call and can check with the bench if they are not confident in their decission - for Vaughn Mayberry to over rule/disagree with the bench than he must be confident in what he saw.

The result of the Cairns - Adelaide game is pending:

With scores tied at 90-90, Dusty Rychart hit what appeared to be the winning basket for the 36ers but the shot clock had expired with 0.7 of a sec to play.

Initially, everyone believed the shot had counted and, while the match officials reviewed the situation, the 36ers -thinking they had won - left the building.

Adelaide 36ers have left the building, refusing to come back to the stadium. NBL Administration has apparently instructed the Sixers to return to complete the final 0.7 seconds, however they aren't.

Under new rules they can take a time out and get the ball at half court.

we have all seen enough shots go down with less than this on the clock.

Just noticed that NBL.com.au now has removed the "result pending" story, and has the score listed as 90-92

Of course, being the NBL website, that means bugger all.

either way nbl need to do several things out of this

firstly and foremost they must "publically" show support for the Ref in question and back him,

secondly make a stance / rule and stick to it whether seen to be right or wrong , and must have COMPLETE support by ALL NBL members and thus publically shown,

the last thing this needs is to have the nbl make a ruling only to have its members publically challenge it or disagree with it therefore showing disunity and bias towards teams,

this un professional incident if handled the right way both publically and internally could potentially have a positive effect on the nbl's public perception if and i stress it is handled professionally by all concerend teams, admin , ref and member clubs of the nbl

Skindog on Ozhoops:

Just spoke with Marc Howard (NBL Communications manager) who has stated that the score is currently Adelaide 92, Cairns 90 and this is a final score, however the NBL are expecting a formal protest from the Cairns Taipans and this will be dealt with accordingly once received.

This is the official word.

I say we take out our anger at the NBL by getting our larget crowed possible to the next game to cheer on the sixers so they win by more than 2 so this never happens again

referee has control if they are in any doubt of time left/time expired they can ask the scoretable - the chairperson and the timer for their opinion it is still then up to the referee's to make a decision to count score or not, or if foul occured or not. the game hasn't ended to the referee calls full time by putting both arms in the air etc.

you are all only surmising what has happened trying to watch something happen on line would have to be very difficult as we've seen individual scores add up to more than the final score.

if one team has left the court you can't IMO restart the game it isn't fair on either side..if cairns have waited and have continued to warm up you then have possibly given adelaide the chance to rest or you have disadvantage adelaide by allowing them to cool down.

all that can happen now is cairns can lodge a protest with the nbl

all scoretables at national league level have to be accredited to a certain standard.

let the dust settle and i'm sure it will all work out ok, casting blame on scoretables or referees without all the facts is senseless as it would be having a go at nbl admin they have games commissioners at every game who are in charge of the game and all it entails. they can't do anything tonight reports on the game from various sources would have to be received and assessed and all games are video taped.

I hope the NBL backs Vaughan Mayberry's decision. The most important thing is that he is not blamed for this. Whether he made a mistake or not is unimportant at this stage.

And since when can a team appeal the decision of a sporting game. This is Basketball for god's sake! not the High Court of Australia.

Let the original decision stand!

This from Dusty --

The refs dint call the shots when the game ended - they hung around for 5 mins and still the win was theirs, so they left.

20-30 mins later the sixers were called back, but they refused to come back.

He said theres no way they will forfeit it or anything.

The team believes the win is theirs.

Heard same story via another player. Black went crazy after the game and Cairns were warming up for 50 minutes or so "on court", expecting the 36ers to return!

One thing's for sure (and to quote the player involved): this will sure get basketball on the front/back page again!

well this is so stupid. While by all sounds we are lucky the shot got counted i think we have to get the win. The umpires decision is final, do we now go back and question all the little mistakes they made during the game that cost points and replay them? no. If its a mistake its a mistake and all have to live by it, this time the 36ers were lucky, in the past ie mee lowery foul we were not. end of story.

I bet you we (Adelaide) end up getting screwed out of this. It isn't Cairns fault, but if the refs are supposed to have the final say, then Cairns has no case.

I feel for Alan Black but the fact that the call was wrong really doesn't make a difference. Anyone who watches a game of NBL basketball knows that the referees don't EVER come close to getting everything correct, so why should this be any different?

If the league imposes a forfeit on Adelaide then the response from the Sixers should simply be "F*CK OFF". Surely there has to be a time limit, and if a decision can't be reached by the time it takes to get 10 players and a half a dozen support staff from the court and back to their hotel, then any subsequent decision cannot possibly have any credibility.

Like I said, I feel very sorry for Cairns, but this should ABSOLUTELY not cost Adelaide.

how can they. it really has to come down to how much respect you give to umpires. If you start to take away their power what is the point. Games of afl have not been reversed after footage has showed a goal to be a point or visa versa. Its a mistake but one all parties have to live by.

i agree totally joshuapending

the refs should be given the respect regardless of the decision whether right or wrong

but in the past the nbl would rather please the complaining party and im sure at this point they would be thinking , ok adelaide by all accounts should win, as ref decision is final, but they would also be saying cairns wont be happy and we dont like conflict or whinging so maybe a re match would be lesser of two evils,

hope adelaide takes a strong stance if that is the outcome

either way like my first post on this to over turn the decision now will do more harm then good to the nbl ref fraternity, come the next tough call they will be second guessing themselves which will result in more frustrating calls etc..

also stephon where would this leave the nbl leagally , if the over rule and have a rematch shorely that means from now on any game decided at the buzzer the losing team would have justified reason to appeal the result and or take it to the court of arbitration for sports and so forth -- massive can of worms this could open if that decision is made

lets hope theres some level heads nutting this one out at the moment

The game report is up on the NBL website so from the NBL it is the 36ers win unless something comes out of the Taipans protest which would seem unlikely to change the result in anyway or make the game replayed, forfeit etc

Marc Howard from the NBL has stated that the final score is 92-90 in favour of the Sixers but with a complaint pending from the Taipans. The final score has to be the final score regardless of the outcome. The Sixers have put up with their fair share of shit calls from the umpires while the other team have had a benefit from it. It happens all the time, you take the good with the bad. If umpires can't make a decision between the time the game ends and the time the players have left the building, then there cannot be a decision other than that already made.

How fair is it that Black had his players continuously warming up after the Sixers left building and then expecting them to come back? What an unfair advantage that would have been for his team and a tremendous disadvantage to the Sixers. They were alread hyped up over the win only to be told to come back because you really hadn't won. This is absolute absurdity at its worst.

according to Boti quoting Breheny the shot clock went off whilst Dusty's shot was in the air.

Hard to think that any time was left on the clock in that situation.

NBL is a joke if they reverse this decision or do anything withthe scores.

Remember Darryl Pearce was awarded a 3 when TV showed it was clearly a 2 many years ago when the sixers won in Brisbane.

May be that result should be up for reversal as well?

while 2 pts and reffing are at issue i heard that 36ers had 2 pts that were disallowed earlier in the game after the ball allegedly touched an illegal part of the backboard but reportedly it didn't. So we accept there will be wrong calls but the ones in the last second are the only ones that are in the spotlight.

The NBL site now states that:

"A last-second jumpshot by Dusty Rychart has given Adelaide a 92-90 win over the Taipans, but an appeal by Cairns is pending following the controversial finish"

Seems that Cairns have formally made an appeal?

How about they play a double header up at Cairns with the warm-up game being a replay of the 1972 Olympic gold medal game USA vs Russia.

......and then they can also replay the 3rd test.

They need to do that anyway to have a final score. Cairns will lodge an official complaint today though no doubt. The NBL will then assess it and make a decision. I don't think they will take it away from the sixers and if they do, i'm sure the sixers would contest as fair as possible.
