Swimming Centre to cost $60M

Interesting to read today that the new State Swimming Centre at Marion will cost $60 Million Dollars.

$15M from the STATE Government, $15M from the Federal Government, $5M and the land from the Marion Council (wouldn't BSA and South Adelaide love some money from the council for a new venue) and the balance from 'private industy'.

While it isn't basketball related as such it's good to again see that Governments are willing to spend money on traditional Australian Sports while Basketball continues to suffer.

Although who knows what will happen April 30.

Any thoughts?

that has been planned for some time, its cos the adelaide pool is not world standard anymore so all the international events that we can bid for if won will be hosted there. I hope they cut us some slack or help out, but we do need a new pool and that cost big $$$ as you can see.

exactly - you must look at basa situation in perspective to other activities

swimming is big - so is basketball

recent gold medals will ensure these sports will stay popular with the public and the pollies will hop on board

South Adelaide (BSA)should get in their right now!!

Adding a 3 court venue and a multipurpose facility would make sense for all parties.
That council land(Norfolk Ave) would have a market value 2.5-3million.
Add that to the new facility where you are not doubling resources and South and the south west of adelaide would really benefit.

You just have to look at what happens in Melbourne with MSAC - a great multipurpose venue - including basketball!!

There is still talk and plans have been drawn up for a 3 court stadium hooking on to the Marion Sports Club. The Marion Stadium would be demolished and returned to grass land or sold off.
Currently Marion Sports Club is being updated with new Dining area new kitchen and rooms and I believe the stadium would be added from there.

An idea would be to knock down South's tin shed and use this site for the pool. On weekends it is drained and basketball played on 3 courts across the bottom.
It would be great for our state to have a quality swim centre, but will the North adelaide site be kept for social/club swimming, or returned to parklands. I believe a lot of money is needed to maintain it

As stated previously, the MSAC site at Albert Park is awesome - ask anyone who has been there.

Obviously there isn't as great a need for the same size venue in Adelaide, but certainly something scaled down but of similar ilk would be fantastic for all sports.
